Halloweentown is a surprisingly well done TV movie for the Disney Channel. It has spawned 3 sequels, and there are talks of another sequel happening.
The late Debbie Reynolds plays Aggie, a witch who comes to visit her daughter Gwen and grandchildren Marnie, Dylan, and Sophie. Aggie encourages her grandchildren to get more involved with Halloween, but Gwen does not allow this, and does not fully explain why. Aggie tells the children a bedtime story called Halloweentown. In actuality, this is where Aggie lives!
After the children are asleep, Aggie tells Gwen about strange things happening in Halloweentown. She asks for Gwen’s help, but Gwen declines. Marnie overhears the exchange.
When Aggie gets ready to leave, the grandchildren secretly board the magical bus their grandmother does and head to Halloweentown.
Halloweentown is a place where witches, vampires, monsters and all sorts of ghouls live in harmony. How it took until 1998 for something like this program to air is beyond me. It is such a clever idea and again, a well done production by Disney.
The kids must find out what is going on with the town, as well as find their 7 year old sister Sophie, who also snuck on the bus.
The make up and special effects are well done, the performances are great and the story is believable and has a lot of heart. This is an excellent movie to view with the youngsters during the Halloween season.
