MCH Halloween Movie Checklist Day 9: The Night of the Living Dead (1968)

“They’re coming to get you, Barbra!”

Directed by the well-known George A. Romero, this movie is about a group of people trapped in a house that is being attacked by “the living dead” or “ghouls” as they are referred to in the film. They never use the word “zombie”, but this movie definitely introduced the idea of zombies as reanimated, flesh eating monsters.

The movie opens with brother and sister, Johnny and Barbra, going to visit their father’s grave. He is joking with her, trying to scare her, when n the background you can see a figure stumbling towards them in the distance. It turns out to be the first and certainly not the last of the living dead to be encountered.

This movie was very gory for its time. MPAA ratings were not a thing until later that year, and the premiere was shown on a Saturday afternoon. There was controversy because pre teens and children attended the showing, not knowing how terrifying the film would be! Needless to say, some parents were not happy about the nightmares their children had after that.  It ended up grossing $30 million at the box office worldwide, making it a groundbreaking classic release.

It is the first of six “….of the Dead” movies and there are two remakes. Plenty of zombie loving footage for you to sink your teeth into! Cheers!
